US extradites murder suspect after 24 years

Fifty-six year-old suspect in 1986 Diplomat Hotel murder arrives in Israel, to appear in court

The US extradited a 56-year old man, wanted on murder charges in Israel, 24 years after the crime was committed.

The man, who is suspected of murdering Amira Grif on January 1, 1986 at the Diplomat Hotel in Tel Aviv, is scheduled to be brought before the court for a hearing on the remand of his arrest Wednesday.

At the time of the murder the man learned police suspected him and fled to Jordan, and from there to the US, where he has been residing all these years.

But police kept the case open, hoping he would be caught eventually.

Meanwhile, the suspect has served prison time in the US after being convicted of a number of counts of fraud. Investigators in Israel contacted the US authorities and a decision was made to extradite him.

On Tuesday evening, after nearly 25 years, he landed in Ben Gurion International Airport. He was immediately handcuffed and taken into custody
