Rutherford, NJ - Authorities continue their investigation of the firebombing at a Rutherford, New Jersey Jewish temple on Thursday, while religious leaders planned to show their support against hate crimes at an inter-religious service Saturday.
Rev. Donald Pitches, President of the Bergen County Council of Churches, said about a dozen religious institutions in Rutherford and their members have been invited to the interfaith service.
The service will take place at Congregation Beth El on Montross Avenue. Congregation Beth El is the temple where a Molotov cocktail was tossed into Rabbi Nosson Schuman's bedroom early Wednesday morning.
The firebombing is the fourth crime against a Jewish temple in Bergen County since December. The attack is being investigated by authorities as a bias and hate crime and as an aggravated arson and attempted murder.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the FBI are investigating.
"Clearly there is a purposeful campaign by one or more persons to do bodily injury to members of the Jewish community in Bergen County," said Governor Chris Christie. "I will not stand for it."
Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday asking the Department of Justice to fully investigate the attacks on the synagogues.
