BDE: Rabbi Jacob Horowitz of Monsey dies at 66

Rabbi Jacob Horowitz, the longtime executive director of the Community Outreach Center in Monsey, died Saturday. He was 66.

The cause was cancer, said his son, Menashe Horowitz.

Horowitz was born in 1946 in Brooklyn. He spent most of his adult life in Monsey, where he helped run the Community Outreach Center and oversee safety-net programs like Medicaid, energy-assistance and food stamps.

His anti-poverty work made him a noted figure in the Rockland County Hasidic community. His funeral late Saturday at the Congregation Zayoal Moshe Satmar on Monsey Boulevard was reportedly attended by 2,500.

“Rabbi Horowitz was well-respected and known to bring the community together,” county Legislator Aron Wieder, D-Spring Valley, said in a statement Sunday. “His devotion to the entire community and for each individual was unparalleled. I personally lost a great mentor.”

Horowitz is survived by his wife, Helene; six daughters; four sons; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
